Buddhist Services
Offered to the Community
Buddhist teachings, meditation especially, derived from the ancient traditions that grew up in southeastern and eastern Asia, have been found by many people in the west to be a profoundly powerful tool for coping with the demands and pitfalls of our hectic lives.
They may vary widely in their cultural appearances, due to the diverse and large geographic area from which they originate, but they do share a common source going back over 2½ thousand years, with an emphasis on generosity, an ethical lifestyle and the development of compassion and wisdom.
Based on this, individual Western practitioners of different Buddhist traditions in Merseyside are happy to make themselves available to be of service to the wider community.
- Meditation: Groups welcome newcomers who want see its effects for themselves. Most groups listed on this website have regular meditation meetings.
- Education: Schools and other educational institutions may wish to contact groups to give talks on Buddhism within their RE curriculum, or to become Buddhist chaplains within a multi-faith setup.
- Spiritual care: Hospitals and hospices may contact groups for chaplaincy work. Also, the Buddhist Hospice Trust, a national network of Buddhist practitioners willing to give help to the seriously ill, the dying and the bereaved (www.buddhisthospice.org.uk) has members in this area.
- Prisons: There is a nation-wide organisation providing Buddhist teachings to the prison service (www.angulimala.org.uk).
