Diamond Way Buddhism - Karma Kagyu Lineage
Our tradition: The Karma Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism
The Karma Kagyu School is one of the major schools of Diamond Way (Vajrayana) Buddhism. It is a lineage of direct oral transmission that especially treasures experience through meditation. The Karma Kagyu methods were first taught by the historical Buddha Shakyamuni to his closest students. Later, Indian Mahasiddhas like Saraha, Tilopa, Naropa and Maitripa, passed the teachings on to the famous Tibetan accomplishers Marpa and Milarepa. In the 12th century, the monk Gampopa gave the teachings to the first Gyalwa Karmapa, whose successive incarnations have kept them powerful and vibrant over the centuries.
The Karma Kagyu School offers practical teachings applicable in everyday life. A wealth of methods is available for lay people and accomplishers to develop mind's inherent richness and clarity, both through meditation and in one's daily activities. The self-liberating realisation of Mahamudra (or 'Great Seal') is supported by three pillars: verifiable non-dogmatic teachings, meditation, and the means to solidify the levels of awareness that have been attained.
Our Centre in Liverpool
Our Centre is one of more than 570 lay Diamond Way Buddhist centres of the Karma Kagyu Lineage in the West. These centres were started and are directed by Lama Ole Nydahl and are under the spiritual guidance of the 17th Karmapa, Trinlay Thaye Dorje. As all Diamond Way centres, we have a democratic structure and function through unpaid, voluntary work on the basis of friendship and idealism. The members share the responsibility for guiding meditations, answering questions and giving teachings.
In Liverpool Diamond Way Buddhism was established in summer 2001 by a handful of friends, who started meeting for meditation in a terraced house in Aigburth.
In June 2003 we moved on to the new Centre at Newsham Park in the Tuebrook district, after having spent a short interim period meeting in Wavertree. The new beautiful location offers a stunning view over Newsham Park, naturally calming the mind and fostering meditation.
Under the umbrella of the registered charity Diamond Way Buddhism UK (No. 1093406), we work closely together with the other Diamond Way groups and centres in the UK to provide a modern and authentic access to Tibetan Buddhism within the tradition of the Karma Kagyu Lineage of Diamond Way Buddhism.
