Welcome to the website for Buddhism in Liverpool and the Merseyside region. MerseyBuddhists is a loose network bringing together the various Buddhist groups and centres in our region.
The historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, gave teachings to people with a variety of different backgrounds, professions, social status, education, aspirations and so on. Later on, these teachings spread into the many different countries of Asia, where they blended with the cultures that they encountered, giving rise to a large variety of Buddhist approaches, schools, lineages and traditions. Over many centuries they have been preserved within their unique cultural context - but now, for the first time, all of the major traditions exist side by side in Western countries such as the U.K., and most of them can be found and practiced in Merseyside.
Being aware of our common roots, we acknowledge and embrace the diversity of Buddhist approaches, each of them valid in their own right. The goals of MerseyBuddhists are to foster the dialogue between different Buddhist traditions and to offer a one-stop contact point for people interested in various Buddhist groups and practices in this region. You will find a page for each of the participating Buddhist groups in Merseyside (links to the left) which will have contact details for getting in touch with the group should you wish to. There may also be a description of the lineage, details of times and places of their meetings, and links to their own websites, where you can get more information.
We also have a directory of upcoming (and recent) Buddhist events in and around Merseyside and a directory of links to general Buddhist resources on the internet. Finally, we include our contact details, and a page describing the services that MerseyBuddhists can offer to the community (e.g. schools & colleges, etc).
